Rüdesheim am Rhein: The Rhine River Gorge

Rüdesheim is a popular wine-making town on the Rhine River. It is part of the Rheingau winemaking region. We visited this city just prior to the start of the holiday season, so you can see some Christmas decorations being set up in the photos. This is also a popular place for Americans to visit due to its proximity to Lucius D. Clay Kaserne U.S. Army garrison.

High above the town is the Niederwalddenkmal statue. This statue commemorates the unification of Germany and founding of the German Empire in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. The statue is accessible from the Old Town by taking a gondola to the top of the Niederwald Hill.
