Trier, “The Oldest City in Germany”

Often referred to as the “oldest city” in Germany, Trier was founded by the Roman emperor Augustus in about 15 BC. Up until the fourth century it was an important city within the Western Roman Empire. Incredibly, some of the Roman structures from this time are still standing, including the Porta Nigra, which was built during the fourth century.

A block off the main square you will find the High Cathedral of Saint Peter in Trier. It is the oldest church in Germany and parts of the church structure date back to the fourth century.
