Eltz Castle
The Eltz Castle is a remarkable jewel hidden in a forested area far from any town or village. This remoteness kept it from any serious attack during times of war. Unscathed from cannon fodder, like so many other castles that quickly became ruins, this one is fully intact.
From the parking area, I highly suggest taking the footpath to the castle. It runs along a hill overlooking the valley with an escarpment falling sharply down to a brook that follows the path. There are dense trees and vegetation on all sides but at times you can see the winding stream through the foliage. It is quite a sight. You can really sense what it might have been like taking this lonely trail to the grand castle hundreds of years ago.
After spending the day in Cochem, I did not have time to view the inside of the castle but was able to take some nice, exterior photos. Architecturally, I really like the way the castle’s towers are built of stone but incorporates wooden turrets and elements throughout. It really delivers a fairytale image.

Thurant Castle
The ruins of the Thurant Castle stand high up on a hill above the Mosel River and the village of Alken. I arrived at the location late in the evening on my way home but was able to take a few photos of the exterior before dark. Although, I do understand the castle has a few interior rooms that can be viewed for a fee.
