Aschaffenburg, Bavaria Germany

Aschaffenburg is a city in Bavaria with a population of around 70,000 residents. For reference, it is located about forty kilometers east of Frankfurt. It sustained heavy destruction during World War II. Since the town was rebuilt into a modern city, it has a walkable downtown area, including a genuinely nice outdoor pedestrian shopping district, and even boasts one of the first enclosed malls in all of Germany, known as the City Galerie. Also, the town has a couple of quality museums and theatres, including City Theatre Aschaffenburg.

At the center of everything though is Johannisburg Castle. It stands overlooking the Main River, and without question, the castle still defines the city. Other notable landmarks include three historic Catholic churches, a beautiful green space next to the castle, and Schöntal City Park. These landmarks are captured in photo galleries below.

This blog primarily features highlights of the historic parts of Aschaffenburg, but this really is a city that anyone could really get into. It has open spaces yet is walkable and has everything you would want in a town this size. I know I will be returning for some one-of-a-kind pretzel pizza at Wirtshaus Wurstbendel, good stuff!
