Holiday in Puerto Rico

Isla Verde: Area Around Hotel and Beach

Our Christmas break called for relaxation and adventure, so off we went to San Juan, Puerto Rico. From our hotel, the beach, Old Town San Juan, and its fortifications were close by, and those are the primary subjects for this post!

Castillo San Cristóbal

Understanding the importance of Puerto Rico, the Spanish turned San Juan into a military outpost along the coastal land surrounding the harbor during the sixteenth century. The San Cristóbal fortress was the last built, but the largest and strongest of the fortifications.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro

The San Felipe del Morro was the second fortress built after the governor’s palace La Fortaleza was completed. This fortress sits at the point of the entrance to the harbor. The harbor itself, originally called Puerto Rico, was discovered by Christopher Columbus’ compadre Ponce de León. Eventually, the city became known as San Juan and the entire island became known as Puerto Rico.
