Michaelstadt is a charming old town in southern Hesse, located in the Odenwald. It is about an hour drive from Frankfurt. The route to get there offers winding roads and great vistas. It is a perfect trip to take in early fall.
This old medieval city is classically fortified by a circular wall and moat, and prominently within sight from the time you arrive in the town is the Thief’s Tower. Across from it is a nice parking lot for those arriving by car. From there you enter the city, over the moat, by walking across a small pedestrian bridge, and then through a narrow gate next to the tower.

Once inside the city and after passing through by some homes and buildings, you come to the main city market. In it is the original town hall along with various restaurants, hotels, and eateries.

At the north part of town, is the original fortress wall that has buildings to one side and a city park on the other side of the wall.

The side streets provide some insight to local life in Michaelstadt.

Located east of Michaelstadt is an enchanting English garden.
